Every traveller has high hopes while planning a trip to Africa, for the magnitude of experience this amazing continent has to offer, a wildlife safari being in the top of the list. Uganda might not be the first choice, as the most popular destinations are Kenya and Tanzania for an African Safari. But a visit to Uganda makes you feel that this place has amazing beauty, nature, wildlife all exceeding the expectations of us.
Our 4 day visit to Uganda started with Kampala, the capital city of this country, transferred and checked in to Speke Resort, one of the best resorts we have been to.
The first leg of our trip was to Jinja, which is considered as the origin of River Nile. On the way, we could see Lake Victoria, one of the great lakes in Africa. River Nile is so significant from time known to human beings; the longest river in the world. Nile is known by different names : Blue Nile, White Nile, Albert Nile etc during various courses of its flow across the continent.
Jinja welcomes the visitors with a statue of the ambassador of peace and non-violence : Mahatma Gandhi. It was a pleasant surprise to see our beloved Father of the Nation being sculptured and felt really great for the token of love Ugandans have for Him.
The next was crossing of the Equator! Equator passes through Uganda and visitors can cross the imaginary line that divides the northern and southern hemispheres of our planet, in a second or two. The place offers a water experiment to the visitors which demonstrates the electromagnetic effect of both the hemispheres. More on this can be viewed on YouTube. There are colourful African souvenir shops all around this.
The last leg of our trip was to visit the Murchison Falls National Park, named after the majestic water falls. There was the excitement to encounter my favourite African Elephants from Uganda. On reaching the location, we will get transported by ferry to start the safari. The landscape changes from dense woods to thinner jungles followed by the vast grasslands of Africa, The Savannah. We were lucky to see so many varieties of birds and animals on our way to the grassland. The driver took us to the trekking site to go walk down to the Nile river, from where we were taken in a boat to get the most amazing views of the Murchison Fall where tonnes of water gushes out in every second with all its strength and vigour. After the trek up to the top of the falls, we get to see the rainbow colours formed by the sunshine and the water droplets next to the falls. The area offers beautiful views of River Nile, which eventually joins Lake Albert next to the grassland and then forms its delta thereafter. During the safari, we got to see the royal elephants and lions in their natural living space. After the trek and safari, we returned to Kampala to wind up the Ugandan expedition.
Not to forget the country side sights of Uganda which reminded me of the movie God Must Be Crazy. One can see the rusty houses, muddy and unpaved roads and lots of roadside vendors all across the trip to Ugandan villages. The juicy pineapples and melons were indeed a feast for our taste pallets. The typical African souvenirs can be bought in plenty from this country,
If one has time, you should visit the Queen Elizabeth National park to see the Tree climbing lions.
