The Russian Czars and Czarinas, Catherine The Great,The Russian stories of Ivan,The Russian Revolution,The Soviet Union,Vladimir Lenin. These are just a few thoughts that flash into our minds when we hear the name Russia! The mighty country that spans across Asia and Europe, has a blend of both the eastern and western culture. One end close to the North Pole and then the vast Siberian cold desert and the other end closer to Alaska, this country has multitude of options to offer its visitors and blow their minds.
The most visited cities in this country are Moscow and St Petersburg. Our 5 days trip was to cover these two cities, Moscow the current Capital City and St Petersburg the earlier Imperial Capital City. The favourite mode of transportation in both the cities were using the Metro lines. Each metro station is itself a splendour to visit, with superb paintings, glass decors, sculptures, chandeliers etc.
St Petersburg is more European, whereas Moscow gives us more of an Asian feel. The weather in St Petersburg is quite unpredictable as it can get windy, cloudy and rainy any time any day. The State Hermitage Museum was founded by her to display her extensive collection of art and antiques. A beautiful monument in this city is the Church of the Saviour on the Spilled Blood. The mosaics and marbles are superbly done and the multi coloured onion domes win every visitors heart.
Peterhof is a beautiful palace complex with variety of fountains and garden and overlooks the Gulf of Finland. The Peter and Paul Fortress, St Isaacs Cathedral, Winter Palace are all exotic locations to visit in this beautiful and majestic city.
Moscow or Moskva as the Russians say - can be reached from St Petersburg using Siberain train - The Kremlin and Red Square are the must do. The Kremlin is a large fort complex in the heart of the city once upon a time housed by the Czars and now by the Russian President. It has the Tsar Canon and Tsar Bell, numerous historical buildings like Spasskaya Tower, Ivan The Great Bell Tower, Dormition Cathedral etc being a few. One would need half a day to slowly explore and cover the complex. The Red Square is a beautiful city square in Moscow. Red represents both the colour of the predominant red bricks as well as the prevalent communism. The square hosts many attractions like the St Basils Cathedral, Lenins Mousoleum, State Historical Museum, Kazan Cathedral. The Kremlin and Red Square complex are UNESCO World Heritage Site. Bolshoi Theatre is world famous for its shows and Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is also is a must visit.
Russian Churches are famous for its unique Onion Domes and varied colours. The St Basil Cathedral is an exceptional monument with its shape, colours and unique appearance, it symbolises Russia to any traveller.
Russian Circus is world famous for their narratives, grandeur, perfection and variety; it entertains people of all ages and is a must do activity while in Russia. Well, the use of animals in the show definitely adds to the fun, especially the Siberian Tigers.
A trip to Russia would be incomplete without enjoying chilled Vodka shots. Not to forget the Russian Matryoshka dolls, chess boards, Xmas ornaments to add to our souvenir collection.
