We have been to Indonesia twice with a gap of 8+ years. Both the time, the key target was the Tropical Paradise, Bali.
On our first trip, we flew into Jakarta and then took a short flight to picturesque Bali by Garuda Airlines. Bali is known for Rice fields, ancient Hindu temples and its Hindu Culture. We spent 3 days in Ubud area of Bali. We did go to the Rice fields and then for few Hindu temples. But the temple that we liked the most was Nusa dua to its geographical location and post card like pictures. We also visited the Royal temples. Almost all the temples have similar entrance Gate which is 2 open doors in Bali. Accommodation is very cheap in Bali and there are plenty of scenic resorts around. We also took the thermal bath in hot sprints near the dormant Batur volcano. Bali is also known for handicrafts and bamboo works. We picked in plenty of souvenirs including Frangipani essential oils, Garuda statue, Bamboo fountains and Sarongs. There are plenty of stone sculptures of Buddha and the Balinese women.
Post Bali we flew into Jogjakarta on the Java Islands. We visited the magnificent 8th Century Borbodur temple. However weather played a spoilsport and we missed out on the Sunrise at the temple which is supposed to be key highlight of the trip :(. We also visited the beautifully carved Prambanan Shiva temple.

Our second trip was again to Bali with less emphasis on sightseeing. We only visited the Cave temple and the Besakih temple this time. Besakih is on top of a mountain and makes it look very pretty. One thing to note is that in both the temples, Sarong is a must for everyone. Besakih temple entrance fee covers the Sarong rent as well along with a tourist guide. During this trip, we rented out a moped to roam around. We explored few of the Balinese dishes, the Nasi Goreng and Nasi Lemuk along few other snacks. We liked the Nasi Goreng so wait for my Kitchen section to be updated :). My wife also took a quick course on Balinese painting. We spent around 6 days during this trip, primarily enjoying the scenic resorts of Puri Sunia and Sapulidi in Ubud.
