We had awaited long to do our entry to the Southern Hemisphere and to the largest Polynesian Island, New Zealand. There was no obvious reason for the delay but we wanted to ensure we give it quality time to view the Southern Alps. We were pondering upon whether to rent a Car or Caravan and finally decided upon the former. We took the car at Christchurch airport and started towards the hotel. There is not much people you find in New Zealand outside the cities and I wouldnt hesitate to say there were more cattle then people outside the cities. We visited the Christchurch Cathedral which was damaged during the earthquake. We did go around the city and then started towards the Alps. We were lucky enough to stop-by wherever required for photographs during both the sun rise and sunset. Add to it, it was autumn which helped us take all those colourful pictures of the leaves. We travelled through Arthur pass and visited Tasman Glacier, Mt Cook and the Fox Glacier. Drive to Mt. Cook was indeed breath-taking. Days were short and we had to start early in the morning. It was amazing to see millions of stars in the sky which is a rare experience in cities these days. We also spotted the milky way at Church of the Good Shepherd. Pity that we didnt have the right camera and experience to capture it. Having our own car was a big advantage. We stopped at various lakes including Tepako and take plenty of pictures.
We also made a day visit to Queenstown which is more known for adventure sports. We did the Lube but the highlight was the Shot Jet in the chilled weather and getting up close to the mountains in the Canyon at high speeds. On our way back to Christchurch we visited a small park to see the Kiwi bird. In all a very memorable trip, scenic drives , fresh air, lot of stars and very less people :). The souvenirs we brought include a small replica of Kiwi bird, Church in Christchurch, Manuka Honey and few cosmetics made in Rotarua. We didnt plan for Rotarua as we had similar experience of all the Geo thermal activity in Iceland.
