Goa is the land of Beaches.
I have visited Goa quite a few times as a bachelor and with family too. Place is more known for the Golden beaches, Churches, Sea food, Drinks etc. Overall a very happening place. Self travel is the best and it is ideal to pick up a two wheeler on rent and roam around the places. Drinks are cheaper in Goa :). New year is ideal time to visit.
